Porcelain, also called china clay, is a dense white ceramic material made by heating kaolin in a kiln to high temperatures. Porcelain and ceramic beads are either shaped by hand or with molds and carving tools. Ceramic and Porcelain beads are dried and fired, and then they are painted or dipped in glaze. Many glazes use minerals or metallic oxides to create unique colors, and the beads need to be coated multiple times to achieve the desired richness of color.
Porcelain beads are very strong because the heat of the firing often causes glass and mullite to form in the body of the bead. After they are fired they are non-porous and very durable.
